Since ancient times, Japanese culture has believed that writing has a meaning beyond mere language. It is a communicating with our soul and that is a very holy act. Sho is a world drawn by words from the very depth of our soul, a reflection of the greatest spirit. By using a brush with its inherent warmth and power, it also reflects the artist's true self. It is art made with the most exquisite charm.
Sho is spatial beauty composed of white paper and black ink. Only one color expresses all the seasons, all the other colors, all our five senses. Especially work which can be said to be beyond the character of language becomes mighty art as it expresses the writer's spirit.
I have been manifesting Sho as a kind of soul-art, a white and black
game which is beyond Western-style painting in its simple yet many-
sided character.
There are artistic words based on an understanding of calligraphy.
I published my series "Rich textures" in a cursive style of writing,
trying to pursue the potential of a truly new exhibition quality. Sho
impresses us with its simple use of only Chinese ink; but at the same
time it can convey so many colors, smells, atmospheres and a
mysterious depth. "Rich textures" has a lot of such qualities as the
ink harmonizes with my feelings and impressions. I sincerely hope you
can feel this through thie experience of viewing them here.
I promise to tell you little by little how I conceive Sho as an art
form with sensitivity and incentive.
